Omaha Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition promotes the claiming of tax credits through quality volunteer tax return preparation with a goal of providing educational tools and community resources for family asset development.

Our members are credit unions and banks, community and civic organizations, federal, state and local agencies, universities and other professional associations and coalitions dedicated to reducing poverty by increasing financial literacy and creating access to quality financial institutions and products.

Tax Season 2013

Since 2006, we have offered free tax preparation, as well as a long list of services to promote financial stability to our customers, through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is just one of the many tax credits available to those who file a tax return, and the amount varies by household income and family size. Some people miss out on this credit because they don’t owe any taxes and then don’t file a return. By filing a return they can claim this credit and get the money due them. The only way to get the Earned Income Credit, or any other valuable credit, is to file a tax return.

The coalition is committed to empowering customers to improve stability and connect them with responsible partners in the community. Last year these volunteers donated 6,000 plus hours and returned a value through refunds, fees saved, and additional services offered of over $13 million. Through these efforts, we seek to achieve our combined goal of reducing poverty in the heartland.

Poverty Dialogue Series

The Coalition hosted a series of discussions about the challenges and opportunities for reducing poverty in the communities we serve. Our starting point was our annual report on the 2012 Tax Season, but each conversation also examined the unique impact in the communities of the metropolitan area.

Coalition Releases Long-Term Unemployment Impact Study

The Omaha EITC Coalition released a new report on the role long-term unemployment plays in the economic shift after the recent recession in what economists are calling the “Knowledge Economy.” The report details how unemployment has affected the 9% of low to middle income customers of the Coalition as well as highlights policy and program recommendations that would better prepare workers for the new economy. Featured programs in the report are the vocational programs at Metropolitan Community College, the Customer Connect program at Goodwill, and a Bridge Program between the Center for People in Need and Southeast Community College in Lincoln.

Several recent legislative bills addressing solutions offered in the report, such as the establishment of vocational high schools in Omaha and the new grading system of student employability in the Council Bluffs School District, are timely examples of innovative approaches in the Midlands to address the demands of the new economy.
